We are pleased to invite you to attend the Xth ISPCAN European Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, which will take place on 11-14 September 2005 in Berlin, Germany. The conference will be organised by the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and the German Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (GESPCAN).
This conference will be the first one to take place in the enlarged European Union, and the city of Berlin is an appropriate choice to symbolize this historical landmark. More than any other place in Europe, Berlin represents a bridge and a cultural crossroads between the now united parts of the formerly divided Europe. Following the 2003 ISPCAN European conference in Warsaw, we are especially looking forward to provide a forum for a renewed exchange of experiences between professionals from the old and new European Union member states as well as from Eastern European countries. Due to its past as a divided city, Berlin as the new capital of the united Germany is arguably one of the most interesting and culturally attractive places in Europe today.
The theme chosen for the conference is, "New Developments in Science and Practice: Influences on Child Protection." Up-to-date information on innovative research and practice will help professionals from all over Europe to better understand and more effectively address many challenging facets of the complex problem of child abuse and neglect in our modern society. Amongst others, the following main topics will be discussed: Child Protection Systems in Europe, Neuro-Biological Effects of Child Maltreatment, Young Children in Institutional Care in Europe, Primary Prevention and Community Intervention, and Abuser and Abused.
The conference will be open to professionals from all disciplines involved in child abuse and neglect work, including psychologists, social workers, physicians, educators, legislators and law enforcement officers. Special forums will be devoted to social settings for child abuse, street children in Europe, children with mentally ill parents, institutional abuse, care giving settings and child abuse, legal and policy issues, medical diagnosis in child abuse and gender-specific ways of coping with abuse.
The main official language of the conference will be English. In addition, there will be a German stream discussing many issues including the effects of recent law reforms on the work of child protection professionals, as well as an open stream for contributions in other fields of practical and/or theoretical interest.
We would be delighted to have you as our guests at the 2005 ISPCAN European Regional Conference and look forward to welcoming you all in Berlin.
Sincerely,
