Kulia I Ka Nu'u:
Strive for the Highest.

About Kapi’olani

Concerned about the welfare of Hawai’i's mothers and their babies, Queen Kapi'olani opened the Kapi'olani Maternity Home in 1890. From its inception, the hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawai’i's women and children.

The queen endowed her legacy with the motto, "Kulia I Ka Nu'u" or "Strive for the Highest," a phrase that captures our organization's mission as well today as it did more than a century ago. Today, Kapi'olani continues the queen's mission to strive to improve the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents.

As the state's only specialty hospital, Kapi'olani is recognized as Hawai’i's leader in the care of women and children.

In 1969, the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children in conjunction with the State of Hawai’i and many Community Agencies established one of the first Multidisciplinary Child Protection Centers in the Nation. Today, the Kapi’olani Child Protection Center continues its mission to protect children and strengthen families through multidisciplinary assessments, intervention/treatment, prevention, Child Safety Teams, training/education, and advocacy services.
