On Sunday, September 7, ISPCAN is pleased to offer the Master Class themed “What Have We Learned about Child Abuse in the Past 30 Years?,” taking place from 9.00 to 15.00 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. ISPCAN Master Classes provide opportunities to learn from senior scholars about their research and experiences in the field. Dr. James Garbarino will serve as the facilitator and one of the presenters at the 2008 Master Class. Please see Dr. Garbarino’s brief bio and presentation below.

During the past 30 years there have been literally thousands of studies of child maltreatment published. What do we know now that we did not know in 1977? This presentation will review the state of our knowledge about child maltreatment as ISPCAN began (coincident with the presenter’s first published research on child abuse) and thirty years later. Important themes in this review include our understanding of definitional issues, matters of causation, and strategies for prevention and intervention.

Dr. James Garbarino is the Maude C. Clarke Chair in Humanistic Psychology and Director of the Center for the Human Rights of Children at Loyola University in Chicago, USA. The American National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect honored Dr. Garbarino in 1985 with its first C. Henry Kempe Award, in recognition of his efforts on behalf of abused and neglected children. In 1987, he was elected President of the American Psychological Association's Division on Child, Youth and Family Services.
Among his other distinguished awards are the following:
- (1988) the American Humane Association's Vincent De Francis Award for nationally significant contributions to child protection
- (1993) the Brandt F. Steele Award from the Kempe National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect
- (1994) the American Psychological Association's Division on Child, Youth and Family Services’ Nicholas Hobbs Award.
- (2003) the Outstanding Service to Children Award of the Chicago Association for the Education of Young Children.
Books he has authored or edited include:
