Pre – Hong Kong Congress Session of the ISPCAN Working Group on Child Maltreatment Data Collection

Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 409

7 September 2008

The Working Group in Child Maltreatment Data Collection will have a session prior to the XVII th ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect, in Hong Kong, on Sunday, September 7th, in room 409 of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm

An overview of the Working Group projects and activities, followed by a discussion of key elements emerging from its Chapter “International Comparison of Child Maltreatment Data” (to be published in World Perspectives 2008) will take place at the meeting. The WGCMDC will also facilitate a dialogue about data collection, international comparison and technical assistance on child maltreatment data collection.

The Working Group in Child Maltreatment Data Collection WGCMDC was created in 1996 at the XI International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect with the support of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect ISPCAN. A growing collective of individuals and institutions has joined efforts towards the goal of sharing key methodological approaches and findings in the field of data collection. The Working Group has also aimed the development of a network of professional researchers who are involved in developing systematic national data collection programs. The group believes that child maltreatment data collection, data analysis and dissemination are needed to assist in informing the development of polices and programs for at-risk children and youth. In addition, it acknowledges that ongoing data collection provides a basis for trend analysis and can be useful in making inter-jurisdictional and international comparisons.

In 2008, the Child Protection Research Center of the American Humane Association and ISPCAN celebrated an agreement to launch a project to further develop the Working Group and support the creation of a model to provide technical assistance to countries committed to the creation and maintenance of child maltreatment data collection systems.
