Call for Abstracts

The Congress Scientific Committee invites authors to submit abstract proposals for papers, workshops, symposia, and interactive presentations.

Abstract submission is now CLOSED

Please read all the instructions below before beginning the submission.

Abstract Submission Instructions
The person submitting the abstract will serve as the main author (the main point of contact for correspondence). It will be assumed that the main author will also deliver a presentation at the Congress.

  1. Abstract Submission Deadline is 15 February 2008. Abstracts submitted after this date will not be considered.

  2. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts online by following the link at the bottom of this page. Please do not submit an abstract more than once.

In exceptional cases, authors may write to congress2008@ispcan.org to request that an abstract form be sent to them by email. However, applicants are advised to make all efforts to submit online.

  3. If you have already submitted an abstract for past conferences (2005: Berlin, 2006: York, 2007: Lisbon, Manila), you do not need to submit your personal information once again (by completing the ‘Add a speaker’ part). Instead, you should log in with the email and password you created for the the previous conference and simply add an abstract which will automatically be considered for the XVIIth International Congress.

  4. Correspondence will be sent to the main author only, at the email address provided by the author.

  5. All authors of accepted abstracts are required to register for the Congress by
1 July 2008. Failure to do this will result in the abstract being excluded from the program. We encourage authors to register by 10 June 2008, in order to take advantage of the Early Bird registration rate.

  6. All abstracts will be considered on the basis of individual merit by the Scientific Committee, and will be ranked according to the following criteria:

    1. Relevance to the Congress theme, “Towards a Caring and Non- Violent Community: A Child’s Perspective”

    2. Relevance to the selected subtheme:
      • Psychological Abuse: Identification, Assessment and Intervention
      • Culturally-relevant, Evidence-based Intervention
      • Child Trafficking, Child Labor, Child Sexual Tourism
      • Domestic Violence and Child Abuse
      • Children's Voices and Children's Rights (including Legal Protection of Children).
      • Forms of Neglect (including Institutionalized Children).

    3. Importance and relevance of the content to the international audience.

    4. Reference to anti-discriminatory issues

    5. Reflection of a child's perspective (if appropriate)

  7. The Scientific Committee will select submissions for papers, workshops, and interactive presentations and will inform all applicants of the selection process by email by 1 May 2008. The selected abstracts will be finally accepted only after the presenter’s completed registration is received. Presenters are required to pay the conference registration fee.

  8. Abstracts need to be submitted in English using the English online submission system. Paper and Poster presentations may be delivered in either English or traditional Chinese. The abstract submission should include the language of the presentation.

  9. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words. All abstracts should be single spaced, the 12-point Times New Roman font is preferred.

As you submit an abstract please select one of the following which best describes the nature of your proposed presentation:

  • Report on research study. This should include objectives/purpose, method, results and conclusion (please click here to see a sample abstract)
  • Program, technique, policy description (including theoretical basis) with evaluation data
  • Program, technique, policy description (including theoretical basis) without evaluation data
  • Skills development (list what specific skills are covered in the presentation)

Presentation Formats

The Scientific Committee reserves the right to make the final determination regarding the presentation format of accepted abstracts.

Papers
The time allocated for oral presentations is 20 minutes (15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for discussion and questions). Please note that the duration of different paper presentations in the Final Program might slightly vary.

Symposia
Each symposium will be composed of three to five related papers. Authors interested in presenting a symposium are requested to submit all related papers as a single abstract, with clear designations of the individuals' papers and titles (limit 1,500 words). The abstract submission should include all three to five presenters as co-speakers. Symposia should provide as broad a picture of a topic as possible. Space seriously limits the number of symposia which can be accepted.

Workshops
There is an expectation that workshops will be interactive sessions with a focus on skills development or on discussions among participants. The presentation length is 45-60 minutes depending on the level of interaction. Workshops are not didactic presentations and must involve audience participation. Space for Workshops is limited. Submissions for papers are encouraged.
