Against Child Abuse (Hong Kong) was founded in the International Year of the Child with a concern for abused and neglected children. In the past two and half decades or so, the agency shoulders the role of a child advocate and renders a variety of remedial and prevention services including hotline, investigation, casework, groupwork and public education services.
The agency strives for a child perspective, a non-punitive family approach and helps to promote collective responsibility in child's holistic growth and development. With the extension of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the agency also performs the role of monitoring its implementation and actualizing of the “best interest of the child” notion.
With a multidisciplinary collaborative approach, the agency works actively with different disciplines via intervention and service provision, policy and practice sharing, certificate courses on child protection and advocacy. The agency also emphasizes innovative community empowerment and participatory programs such as Healthy Start Home Visiting Programs, Good Mother Networking Program, Child Safety Ambassadors Program, Child Councilors Program, Zero Tolerance of Violence: Move Beyond Corporal Punishment and district prevention programs such as WTS Child Safe and Child-Friendly Community.
Against Child Abuse conducts various surveys, the latest one relating to the Cyber world and child pornography, producing training manuals and training the trainers. It has jointly organized the 5th Asian Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect with ISPCAN and the local Social Welfare Department in 1999, and assisted in child protection training in Singapore, China, Taiwan, and most recently in Macau with the establishment of the Against Child Abuse (Macau) in 2006.
