BASPCAN is a multi-professional, charitable association founded in 1979 with a current membership of almost 2000. It is the only multi-professional, national association, the aims and objectives of which concern the protection of children from significant harm and safeguarding and promoting their welfare. The Trustees of the Charity are members of the National Executive Committee and reflect the multi-professional nature of the membership.
The Association arranges national conferences addressing topical issues, holds a National Congress, which has gained an international reputation, every three years, publishes a newsletter four times a year and a well-respected, peer-reviewed professional journal Child Abuse Review in six volumes each year. The National Office in York provides a focus for professional networking. Local branches organise conferences and seminars and provide useful local networking for professional staff, independent of the agencies for which they work.
Members of the Association are from all professions involved and interested in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable children. It has a strong emphasis on practice and making available high quality educational provision affordable to grass roots practitioners.
