A Professor of Paediatrics at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and a member of its Senate, Mohd Sham Bin Kasim, MBBS, DCH, MRCP, AM, FRCP, FAMM, has held a number of distinguished committee posts in academia, government and the community over the years of his outstanding career in the service of children, including that of Vice Chairman of the Malaysian Council for Child Welfare (MCCW) since 1982.
Dr. Kasim is the Secretary General of the Association of Paediatric Societies of the South-East Asian Region (APSSEAR); Editor-in-Chief of the Asian-Oceanian Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health; a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, United Kingdom; and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia.
He joined ISPCAN in 1983 and served as an executive committee member (1988- 1996), President-Elect (1996-1998), President (1998-2000), and Past President (2000-2002). Dr. Kasim has presented papers addressing child needs and prevention of child abuse and neglect at 44 national and international conferences over the course of his career, and has been a speaker at many ISPCAN International Congresses. He set up the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Team at Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 1985. He was also the Organizing Chairman of ISPCAN’s 10th International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect in Kuala Lumpur, 10-13 September, 1994.
Other roles Dr. Kasim has held include committee posts with APSSEAR, Asean Paediatric Federation (APF), and International Society of Tropical Paediatrics. He also served as the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM); Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Institute of Paediatrics, General Hospital Kuala Lumpur; Dean of the Faculty and Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM, Serdang, Selangor; and as Director of the Medical Postgraduate Studies Centre at UPM.
Dr. Kasim has received numerous national awards for his work with children, including the Darjah Pingat Jasa Negara (PJN) in 1997, and the Outstanding Paediatrician for Asia in 1997, the latter presented by the Association of Paediatric Societies of the Southeast Asian Region (APSSEAR).
Publishing widely in the field, Dr. Kasim has authored or co-authored a host of journal articles and book chapters, including the Malaysia chapter in Child Abuse, A Global View; “Impact of Child Abuse and Neglect on Professionals in Developing Countries” in Jurnal Perubatan UKM; and “Multidisciplinary Approach in the Management of Child Abuse and Neglect” and “Child Abuse and Neglect as Detected at Major Government Hospitals” in the Malaysian Journal of Child Health. He also has had articles published in Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal.
