Since the year 1999, ISPCAN has been organizing pre-conference Global Institutes in San Diego, CA, in association with the Annual San Diego International Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment. The 2008 Global Institute focused on "Cross-Border Child Trafficking ."

Global Institutes have attracted many US and international professionals interested in global issues and the most recent research findings in the field of Child Abuse and Neglect in selected regions of the world. ISPCAN welcomed this opportunity to contribute to the field's body of international knowledge on issues of Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment. Our Council, Faculty and members committed to organizing the Global Institutes by providing experts from different countries, representing a multidisciplinary cross-section of the field. We believe that our CAN experts' contribution to this program was rich and valuable and provided San Diego Conference attendees with an opportunity not only to learn, but also to discuss international CAN issues and facilitate networking.

Event: VII ISPCAN Asian Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect

Vth African Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect
Theme: HIV/AIDS and Children: The Challenges of Care for and Protection of Children in Africa
Dates: 27-29 March 2007

Description: The African Network for Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN), Uganda Chapter organized this conference in conjunction with ISPCAN. The conference featured researchers, academics, practioners and children. The conference shared ideas, experiences, and good practices and research findings on the care and protection of children in the era of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. Practitioners, researchers and children also explored strategies for developing and scaling up effective and sustainable responses towards the protection of children living with and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Professionals and communities need each other to forge effective responses, and both need to be able to see the world through the eyes of children and young people to share ideas and experiences from across the global community about protecting children in a way that welcomes children and young people as valued participants.

The First Arab ISPCAN Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect

Theme: Violence against Children, Breaking the silence… Strengthening responses
Dates: 23-25 February, 2004

Description: The goal of the conference was to:
  1. Examine the extent and patterns of the problem of child abuse and neglect in the Arab world,
  2. Explore the cultural implications for child protection,
  3. Explore the various aspects of the problem: detection; management; and prevention at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels,
  4. Promote the multi-disciplinary approach to management of child abuse cases.
The conference sought to encourage a positive response of professionals to "UN organizations" protocols, guidelines, and studies that deals with combating violence against children. It was the declaration event of the establishment of "The Arab Professionals Network for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect”.

The San Diego Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment presented by Chadwick Center for Children and Families, Children's Hospital-San Diego was held at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center. As the pre-eminent symposium on child abuse, this conference attracts 2,000 professionals internationally. Since inception, the purpose is to enhance the skills of professionals in the prevention, recognition, assessment and treatment of all forms of child abuse and neglect, including those related to family violence. An international audience, representing medicine, mental health, law, criminal justice, child welfare, public policy, and research, depends upon this meeting for state-of-the-field accredited continuing education and research, and review of pertinent issues of public policy. It is the second time in 25-years of ISPCAN history that European Regional Conference will be held in Eastern Europe (the previous was Prague in 1991).  Warsaw Conference provided a unique opportunity for Eastern European professionals to exchange experiences and adopt new methodological tools.

The Congress was open to multidisciplinary professionals including psychologists, social workers, physicians, educators, legislators, and law enforcement officers.
